Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is The Millie Project?

The Millie Project was created in honor of Millie, a beloved golden retriever who touched the hearts of millions of people with her warmth and spirit.

When we lost our cherished girl in October of 2025, we founded The Millie Project to carry forward her legacy by dedicating ourselves to supporting rescue dogs.

Our mission is to fund and promote programs that prioritize safety, wellness, and successful lifelong placement for these animals. We firmly believe that every dog deserves the same opportunity to live a life filled with love and care, just as Millie did throughout her wonderful life.

  • How does The Millie Project support rescue dogs?

We offer essential resources to help at-risk and adoptable dogs thrive, including:

    - Rescue operations in WA, OR, and CA
    - Spay/neuter services
    - DNA and health testing
    - Behavioral support and stress relief
    - Enrichment programs
    - Adoption preparation
    - Post-adoption support

Our mission is to ensure every dog is emotionally, medically, and behaviorally ready to succeed in a loving home.

  • How is The Millie Project different from a traditional animal rescue?

We don’t operate a shelter, and we don’t take owner surrenders. Instead, we focus on supporting existing rescues and foster networks by filling crucial gaps in care:

    - Wellness & behavior support
    - Enrichment & decompression resources
    - DNA & medical screening
    - Training and post-adoption guidance

We’re here to strengthen the rescue ecosystem, not duplicate it.

  • Where do the dogs you support come from?

We partner with rescue organizations, including Because We Care Rescue, who save at-risk dogs from shelters and crisis situations throughout the western United States.

These rescues handle transport and intake, and we help provide the resources dogs need to relax, heal, and prepare for adoption.

  • How are donations used?

Transparency matters to us. Donations directly support rescue dogs through:

    - Health & DNA testing
    - Behavior support and trainer consults
    - Enrichment supplies & safe rest spaces
    - Training and adoption resources for families
    - Emergency medical and care assistance

Every dollar is dedicated to improving animal welfare outcomes and honoring Millie’s legacy of love.

Our funding is primarily allocated to “Are You My Human?”, a third-space located in Bellingham, Washington. Learn more Below!

  • Can I adopt a dog through The Millie Project?

    We don’t place dogs directly.
We work alongside rescue partners who handle adoption applications and placements.

However, many of the dogs we support spend time at Are You My Human? Rescue Dog Lounge, where the community can meet them in a calm, social setting.

We’re always happy to direct you to the rescue caring for a specific dog if you’re interested in adopting!

Are You My Human?

Are You My Human? is a community-based rescue dog lounge located in Bellingham, Washington. Unlike a traditional shelter, AYMH provides a calm, home-like environment where rescue dogs can decompress, socialize, gain confidence, and meet their future families in a welcoming space.

Dogs at the lounge come from partner rescues who specialize in saving at-risk animals from high-intake and underserved regions across the western United States. For many of these dogs, the lounge serves as a crucial bridge between survival and stability, a place to rest, rebuild trust, and be seen.

How We Support AYMH

The Millie Project proudly funds programs, wellness support, and resources that directly benefit the dogs cared for at Are You My Human?.

While our long-term vision includes supporting multiple rescue partners, AYMH is currently our primary beneficiary because their innovative, enrichment-focused model makes a meaningful difference for dogs who struggle in traditional shelter environments.

Our funding helps provide:

  • Coverage of overhead costs such as rental space and staffing

  • Vaccinations and medication when needed

  • Medical procedures

  • DNA & health testing

  • Behavior and decompression support

  • Enrichment tools and supplies

  • Adoption readiness and family education

  • Post-adoption guidance to ensure lasting placements

By supporting AYMH, we help ensure that dogs not only find homes, they are emotionally, physically, and behaviorally prepared to thrive in them.

Why This Partnership Matters

Traditional shelters are often overwhelmed, loud, and stressful for sensitive dogs. AYMH offers something different: safety, calm, connection, and time. The Millie Project exists to invest in approaches like this, approaches that prioritize emotional welfare, thoughtful placements, and long-term success. Together, we honor Millie’s legacy by helping more dogs feel safe, loved, and chosen.
